Re: Fielding a young team?
Broadly agree Trevor B, but why does it have to be tied to contract length? Whatever the length of contract, the board could make developing youth a part of the head coach's remit. The man in charge would understand he's being evaluated not only on finishing position, but on the young players he promotes and develops.

Re: Fielding a young team?
there was a good article written by rio a little while back that basically said at most top clubs young players wont get a chance because in the majority of cases managers wont take the risk. he mentioned that it was the responsibility of owners to place less pressure on managers for immediate results and more on the long term good of the club/game as a whole.

Re: Fielding a young team?
there is a lot of difference between where we are and where we could finish, higher or lower, with 7 games left. if sam had a long term contract and part of his contract target was to integrate youth then i thikn we would have maybe seen more of a couple of them. but i think his targets have been promotion, staying up, improving on that, then trying to attain a european place (with the priviso of trying to play better football. if you want a manager to plan for the future then he really needs more support from the owners than a 2 year deal in my opinion. i would also suggest that the owners know the younger players arent good enough, thats why quite a few have been let go recently to find new clubs ahead of the summer exodus.

I get that and I know that reward for league position differs, but the club has slipped outside the running for Europe with only the option of fear play being available. The chairmen must accept a position where we are likely to end up and it is likely to be where we currently are. I would press for the investment in youngsters to be used and see how it goes, at least one or two in roles with support from other players.

Surely that has to be better than watching Nolan and CFC puff around the pitch.

TI

with each place being worth somewhere about 1.5-2m and the manager needing to finish as high as possible to have a chance of a contract extension then i can understand why youngsters havent got much of a chance. and yes, many of them may well be nowhere near the standard required, hence why so many have been shipped out recently and seemingly the academy is in for a bit of an overhaul.

im sure someone will mention harry kane, thats not a reason to blindly give inferior players a go just in case, the manager has to have some confidence in their ability.

Re: Fielding a young team?
I would pick our best team
That would have Poyet in the squad ahead of Nolan
And instead of Demel AND O'Brien I would replace one with Burke or Oxford.

Re: Fielding a young team?
He'll get absolutely slated on here for any loss, no matter what team he puts out, be it our 'strongest' IX, a load of academy players, or anything in between.

I don't think his employers would be impressed if he didn't pick close to his best XI available players in every match, though.

Re: Fielding a young team?

I'm not talking about cup games or when we are in a relegation battle, just when we have nothing to lose. We won't make Europe and this would be a chance to see who can shine.

Re: Fielding a young team?
I can forgive us for losing, most the time. We're all pretty used to it. Its the manor of how we're setting up and the personnel which is an issue since giving Chelsea the game just before Christmas.

Got slated as sending lambs to the slaughter for playing a young team last season against lower league opposition.
